Discovery New School has a Christian character in the Anglican tradition (Church of England). This informs our belief that all people are equally deserving of our care and attention. We value the diversity of our school and have pupils from a range of religious backgrounds. Indeed we make no selection based on religious beliefs for admissions and children from all backgrounds are welcome.
Our school should be a happy place where people are treated kindly - with grace, compassion and forgiveness. These are the ideals we strive for.
Practically in school, we say grace before lunch and have opportunities for Christian collective worship in school. The wording of grace varies but it is used as an opportunity to feel thankful for what we have, when others are not so fortunate. This is something everyone can appreciate, regardless of his or her own beliefs.
We are an inclusive school, and so we use Christian teaching and bible stories to impart truths that everyone can relate to, about compassion, forgiveness and acting kindly. We encourage children from other faiths to share their celebrations with us.
Discovery New School's R.E curriculum covers all the major world religions as well as giving children an opportunity to learn about Christian beliefs and festivals. We believe it is important for children to learn about others' beliefs and to be respectful of them.
Our approach is always one of respect for individual beliefs. This also applies to differences in the way different Christians may interpret their own faith. Children are always encouraged to be questioning, thoughtful and respectful as we explore issues of faith in school.
